I snapped this shot while skimming by in our fishing boat. Looked so serene and peaceful… the water had just settled into a perfect sheet of glass for the night and we were heading back to camp to make dinner. The water was so smooth in fact that even at the 15-20km/h we were zipping by at, we could see the pollen and bugs scattered across the surface of the water 50 feet ahead of us.

Truly one of those moments you just have to take in because no picture, however great, will never do it justice.

However, now that I’ve revisited my entire approach with how I wil use One Thousand Words I wanted to revisit it as this particular trip was a a truly meaningful experience that is still resonating with me today. In fact, I have a large 3.5 by 2-foot enlargement of this image framed and hanging in my studio directly across from my desk, so I actually see it just about every single day. Not just any photo could last that long in plain view I don’t think, at least not around me, if that offers any insight into the impact the beauty of this trip made on me.

We canoed into Little Misty Lake in Algonquin Park starting from an old logging access road in Kearney, Ontario. The day we broke trail it was cold, raining (all day while we were paddling) but had yet to snow yet that season. After the first night we woke to 24 inches of fresh snow and parts of the river icing over. It was a great initiation for Charlie as he learned the hard way swimming isn’t great this time of year.

On our way out of the park, there were many tress that had fallen under the wait of the snow and made the portages even more challenging. We were also trapped on the loggin road by serveral downed trees which we took turns cutting through with a small camping saw. Lucky for us we were prepared.
